What is Zirconium Crown?

The name zirconium derives from the Persian word zargun. Zargun means gold colored. It was discovered first by German scientist Martin Heinrich Klaproth, while heating a number of gemstones, in 1789. It is one of the transition metals on the periodic table, whose symbol is Zr and atomic number is 40.

What is Zirconium Crown?

Zirconium reacts with the elements like nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen very rapidly. Therefore, it exists in the form of compounds in nature. Zirconium oxide tops the list of these compounds. It is a crystalline substance resistant to corrosion and heat. Thanks to these properties, it is used in numerous areas such as nuclear energy generation, ceramic and glass industry, and dentistry.

Zirconium in Dental Treatment

In the early 1990s, zirconium oxide was stabilized at 22°C by adding calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), yttrium (Y), and cerium (Ce), thus starting its use in dental treatment. Although it was used in the production of orthodontic bracket, implantology, prosthetic restorations, and the production of crown bonding in the beginning, it is used as the substructure material for all ceramic restorations today.

The zirconium crown has the following advantages: high durability, biocompatibility, low heat conductivity, and less bacterial accumulation compared with titanium. Although the tissue compatibilities of the implants coated with zirconium or aluminum oxide show similarities and there is no significant difference between two materials, the reason why zirconium crown is preferred as a dental implant material is the fact that it is more durable than aluminum oxide. This property of zirconium derives from its tetragonal structure. Besides, zirconium crown comes into prominence for the reasons such as it does not leave any taste in the mouth, as it does not include metal, its color does not change, and it is aesthetically beautiful. It is preferred by dentists, since it can be produced in the laboratory environment compatibly with the other teeth and in a short time.

Since zirconium crown does not include metal, it does not cause coloring of the gum where it contacts the gum, and it does not damage the gum, as it is compatible with the tooth. Since it is heat resistant, its sensitivity ratio is less than metal crown. Zirconium crown is a method applied on decayed, broken, crooked teeth, and it can be applied on any individual after the mouth and dental structures have settled. It is suitable to be used on the front and back teeth. It is preferred to have aesthetically beautiful front teeth and/or stronger back teeth. The dentists use it to crown the teeth of the people who want to have white teeth or the Hollywood smile design appearance. Regular care after crowning saves the teeth from turning yellow, but yellowing of not well-cared crowns can also be eliminated with a short and simple bleaching process in the clinical environment. The life span of the crown varies by the dental care of the individuals, but the probability of breakage of zirconium crown is very low unless hit with a hard impact. The post-zirconium crown feedbacks of the patients are rather positive.

The first operation in the zirconium crowning is to cut the tooth, but since this operation is performed under anesthesia, there is no pain during the operation; however, a mild pain might be felt in the aftermath. This pain can be suppressed with mild analgesics, depending on the person’s condition. After cutting of the teeth, its recovery takes a while; then, the dental impression is taken precisely. The substructure of the teeth is prepared in the computer environment by using the Cad-Cam technology, tried on the patient, adjusted as necessary after obtaining the patient’s approval, and consequently, adhered to the teeth by using special adhesives. This special adhesive prevents internal decay of the tooth. Since the gap between teeth is closed by the crown completely, the tooth decay is prevented.

It is suggested that extremely hot, extremely cold, hard and/or sticky foodstuffs are avoided during the first week following the dental crowning procedure. It takes a short time like a week to get used to zirconium crown.

The zirconium crown can be applied to treat decayed teeth, eliminate the color changes caused by smoking, repair broken teeth, close the gap between teeth for aesthetic purposes, to correct crooked teeth, on the patients who have sensitive gums, on the filled teeth, and on the patients who are allergic to metal. In cases that include the loss of multiple adjacent teeth, first the implant treatment is applied. Then, zirconium crown can be applied if preferred. The reason of not applying zirconium crown first is the increased probability of breakage, since there is no tooth to support the crown.

Zirconium crown is as strong as the natural teeth, but it is necessary to avoid applying excessive force that will damage your tooth, such as cracking nuts, bending metals, which must not be done with natural teeth, either. In case of any dislocation or coming away of zirconium crown, the tooth on which the adhesive has shifted may decay. In such a case, it is necessary to apply to a dentist without delay.
